This Butter Sponge Cake or Biscuit au Beurre is a very special recipe. Not only it is a great cake to make any time of the year, but it is perfect for a special occasion, too. By using just a few tools you can transform this sponge cake into the Valentine’s Day cake, Anniversary cake, you name it, in just a few minutes!
This time I will use this recipe to make a simple Valentine’s Day treat.
Interesting fact: Even though the roots of the Valentine’s Day go back to AD 496, it became associated with romance and love only in the 14th century. ?
How may times have you stressed about making something special on the Valentine’s Day? And how many times have you spent hours looking for that “special” recipe just to find out that it takes too much time to make? This butter sponge cake recipe is exactly opposite. It is quick, easy to make and will take you minimum efforts to achieve that wow factor. Together with Vanilla Affogato, it is a great recipe to make your loved one’s day even more special!
This butter sponge cake is very light and is perfect to serve with glazed fruits or icing sugar on top. I’ve chosen icing sugar this time, but you can easily swap it on Step #7 “Decorate” with fruits, cacao powder, etc. The sponge cake is especially delicious with a cup of black tea or coffee.

5 Done 35 min | Bake CakeWhen the cake dough is ready, transfer it into a prepared cake tin greased with a little bit of butter. Next, place the cake into a preheated 350 °F (175 °C) oven and bake for 30-35 minutes. |
6 Done 8 min | Let It RestRemove the cake from the oven and allow to rest in the pan for 6-8 minutes. Sprinkle icing sugar powder on top. |
